The role of tile seam? Why caulk?

Tiles must be left seam when paving, no matter whether the tiles are "seamless tiles" or "round edge tiles" (Editor's note: some are also called "original edge tiles"), they need to be left when paving. Seam processing!

The main reasons are as follows:

1. The tile has the problem of thermal expansion and contraction:

Just as the volume of water freezes and expands, the tiles and the cement mortar attached to the tiles will have the problem of thermal expansion and contraction. In the process of changing temperature or humidity, the tiles and cement mortar will expand and contract to a certain extent, if there is no gap left , which will cause the tiles to bulge or crack during later use. (In construction, whether it is a bridge or a house structure, expansion joints must be left)

2. There are errors in the tiles themselves:

Although ceramic tiles are now produced mechanized, there will be a certain size error in the process of product production (excessive error is a quality problem of the product). Uneven seams will affect the aesthetics of the tiles.

3. There are errors in the construction of workers:

The paving of ceramic tiles is a construction project with a very high level of proficiency. During the whole process of paving, it is impossible for workers to make sure that there are no errors when paving each tile. The workers are in a bad mood, day and night, etc. The effect of the tiles laid in different situations will be different. If there are no seams, it is also difficult to ensure that the joints of the tiles are straight, which affects the aesthetics of the tiles.

How big is the seam?

Regarding this issue, there is no unified standard. In addition to satisfying the thermal expansion and contraction factor of the ceramic tile itself, it also needs to be determined in combination with the decorative effect of the tile paving. The seam sizes of some common tiles below are for reference only:

(1) Generally speaking, the size of the seam of the wall tiles of the kitchen and bathroom should be about 1-1.5mm, not less than 1mm. Air nails or packaging bags can be used as a reference.

(2) Special effects can also widen the gap, such as 5mm. Like some antique bricks or exterior wall bricks and balcony strip bricks, it is better to leave wide gaps.

(3) Floor tiles, such as vitrified tiles, generally leave a seam of about 1.5-2mm when laying.

Why tile caulking?

There are two main reasons for tile caulking: one is for aesthetics, and the other is for health. If the gaps in the tiles are not filled with products, it is easy to be filled with garbage, which is not only difficult to clean up and finally dirty and black, but also easy to breed bacteria, endangering the health of the family, and becoming one of the hidden dangers of the family.
